Prevage by Elizabeth Arden: Ingredients

by admin on May 29, 2009

The main ingredient in Prevage Anti-aging Formulas is Idebenone. Idebenone is one of the most powerful and effective antioxidants in the market today and is known for preventing as well as correcting skin damaged by environmental factors.

So, what exactly is Idebenone?

Idebenone is a fine orange powder which was originally developed in 1986 as a treatment option for Alzheimer’s Disease. However, in the early nineties, a group of German scientists became interested in this antioxidant and conducted further research on it in the hope of maximizing the antioxidant’s potential.

One of the German scientists on the team, a dermatologist, tested Idebenone as a topical ingredient and found that it had great potential in enhancing skin care. Compared to coenzyme Q10, Idebenone is approximately 60% smaller and because of this, Idebenone has a more potent protective and revitalizing effect.

Since then, there have been numerous clinical studies on Idebenone and these studies have proven that it is indeed an effective ingredient in skin care. In fact, certain studies have shown that it is more effective than alpha lipoic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10.

Prevage Anti-Aging Formulas uses a fairly high concentration (0.5%) of Idebenone and an Environmental Protection Factor (EPF) of 95. Together, this makes the anti-aging formula to be effective. Prevage has the right amount that helps protect skin from damage caused by harmful environmental assaults to revitalize the look of skin.

A clinical study of 107 subjects who used Prevage for a period of 8 weeks showed a significant decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as an overall improvement in the firmness, tone, texture and radiance of their skin. Further, consumers who were tested including those with moderate to severe sun damage, saw a significant improvement in their skin’s overall appearance. As the clinical tests prove, Prevage Anti-aging formulas with Idebenone are an effective way to fight the visible signs of skin aging.

Here are the rest of Prevage’s ingredients -

Water (Aqua), Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Pentylene Glycol, PEG-8, Glycerin, Phospholipids, Isopropyl Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Algae Extract, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate/VP Copolymer, Hydroxydecyl Ubiquinone, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, PPG-2 Isoceteth-20 Acetate, Propylene Glycol, Sodium PCA, Trehalose, Urea, Polyphosphorylcholine Glycol Acrylate, Deoxyarbutin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Sodium Acrylate/Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polyquaternium-51, Polysobutene, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol, Mica, Fragrance (Parfum), Benzoic Acid, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol Propylparaben, Sorbic Acid, Chlorphenesin, Red 4 (CI 14700), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

So, what do I think of Prevage?

There is no doubt that Idebenone is an effective antioxidant that will produce positive results when used on the skin. Moreover, the inclusion of the environmental protection factor (EPF) which gauges a product’s ability to protect our skin against the elements is also a welcome ingredient.

However, I would have wanted to see more than just Idebenone on the list of ingredients. At $155 per 1.7 oz bottle, I feel that they should have been able to add more powerful ingredients to make the product more effective.

I will not deny that Prevage is one of the better anti-aging products in the market. It is trusted by a lot of consumers as it is effective in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet and all the other skin imperfections that we are so frustrated about when it comes to aging.

If you are looking for an anti-aging product to try, this is a good one to try. But like I always say, always do a skin test first!
